Writers Wanted
Ever watched TWD and say, "That’d NEVER happen. Zombies don't just spring at you from offscreen like that. You'd hear and smell them a MILE away.” If so, you may be a great fit!
We need the action and horror entertaining and consistent during our events, so we need module writers. Sure, sometimes writing "modules" (planned/timed NPC events) are just, "Zombies go errrrrr." But there's also overarc plot! And trade meetings! And hordes! So many hordes. Want to write your own season's worth of z-drama or raider horror? If we like your work, we will pay you for your ongoing story mods!
Please submit via Contact Us below or via Discord messaging a short NPC mod sample with the purpose of advancing a post-apocalypse storyline. How many NPCs are required? What are their motivations and desired results? Are they Killing Blow active (taking characters’ lives, possibly permanently)? If so, how do those choices advance the story?
For example: Clues are left out in the field by a Guide that lead player characters to a building. It's a trap! A gang of ruffians ambush the survivors, directed by the new Big Bad in town to show the settlement who's boss. If the characters let the NPC ruffians extort them instead, maybe they can work together after all…
Or player characters are walking at night from the safety of the meeting hall’s light to their tents, chatting away with no fear of the dark. Suddenly a twig cracks nearby. They hear the first moan, then another. Is this a random pack? Or is this just the first wave of an encroaching horde that will take months to survive?
It's easy to overthink it, so keep your sample module submissions lean, entertaining, and easy to enact on the field and we'll train you on the rest. (If we use your sample we pay you for it!)
As a Writer, the Story Director provides you with Dystopia Rising: L.A.'s narrative and vibe, and you supply fun mods that match it. They must focus on horror, class warfare, and fictional facsist theocracy.
Module Guides Wanted
The writers have written the mods (modules) that you now have in your hands. You're given temporary custody of a group of casted NPCs (actors). They eagerly await their motivations (or horde tactics) before you send them out into the world to horrify and terrorize their fellow players. You go out with them out-of-character, everyone ignoring you and your acting troupe until...it's time. Suddenly a pack of zombies shamble out from around a corner, their moans announcing their presence to their fellow players. The survivors jump to attention, brandishing their weapons at the easy kills. Little do they know, on your mark, these zombies will charge at full sprint. In 3...2...1...
Your role is to run mods in the play spaces as a mini live theater director. You give the NPCs instructions, and you make sure everyone's safe and follows the rules. Please apply via Contact Us form below.
Logistics Guides Wanted
Control freak? Perfectionist? Love spreadsheets? Think you can do this job better than everyone else? Customer service skills...meh? 4 out of 5 ain't bad! Be nice enough that people still appreciate your blazing efficiency!
Your role is to facilitate the behind-the-scenes admin and "rectangles" aspect of the game, such as checking people in/IDs, handing players currency and/or item cards (rectangles). Apply via Contact Us!
Ops Guides Wanted
Like overhead RTS PC games with the battlefield laid out before you? Like DMing epic sagas that start with an adventuring party at an inn, knowing that the simple encounter they just had will alter the course of their lives and the (local) game universe? Like 40k games where you're moving squads in different directions based on real-time player decisions? Ops Guides are the live entertainment coordinators of DR:L.A.!
DR: L.A. needs YOU! Ops Guides are given background insight to how the events need to happen to entertain the most amount of players. They are the behind-the-scenes "guy/girl/they in the chair" who operate NPC land (like directing players on their NPC shifts what to wear from wardrobe, pairing them with their Module Guides, etc.), and record the results of NPC and player actions during mods to influence the ongoing story. The cohesion necessary for a weekend long zombie post-apoc event can be daunting, but Ops Guides thrive on pain and anguish. They're DMs. They lived through 4th Edition D&D...and liked it. The importance of Ops Guides can't be understated. You have to keep secrets from your peers so as to not spoil narrative surprises, while also playing as your own character/s who set the roleplaying and genre standard for DR: L.A. Ops Guides are as much an ambassador who represents the owners of the chapter as they are the "well ackshualy" rules lawyers who maintain the genre and consistency of the Dystopia Rising network. Please submit qualifications via Contact Us or Discord.
Real talk, we don't know what we don't know about forming DR: L.A.’s staff. Above are the positions we absolutely know we need. The Writer position is paid freelance work, per “module” written and accepted. The Ops Guide position grants you a free game and bonus XP. The others replace NPC shifts. As well, we’ll host most staff events in Long Beach or Burbank (L.A.) if not via Discord.
